Week 1 Discussion – TA

Are You a Social Entrepreneur?

An entrepreneur is a unique type of individual. Entrepreneurs are not afraid of taking risks, are not afraid to put their reputations on the line, and, most importantly, are not afraid to fail. Extraordinarily successful entrepreneurial ventures like Google, Tesla, or Amazon may receive the most attention, but the fact is that the majority of companies fail in their first year. There are many reasons for this; for example, sometimes the business model is not profitable enough, the business runs out of investment funding, or it turns out that a product prototype cannot be put into production. Successful entrepreneurs persist through these difficulties. They realize the road to success is not easy and that there will be many obstacles. An entrepreneur is someone who is willing to accept these risks and obstacles as part of the journey, who enjoys struggle, and who accepts failure as the possible price for persevering through struggle.

In this Assignment, you will take a minimum of 2 entrepreneurial self-assessment surveys and identify the type of entrepreneur you are and three of your entrepreneurial characteristics as indicated by the survey. Then, you will explain how these characteristics may represent strengths in social entrepreneurship ventures.

Week 1 Discussion – TA

What Is Social Entrepreneurship and Who Are Social Entrepreneurs?

When exploring a new concept, sometimes the clearest way to define it is to see it in contrast with other, more well-known concepts, thereby seeing its parameters in relief. To that end, it may be helpful to first consider what traditional, or commercial, entrepreneurship is before you consider social entrepreneurship. An entrepreneur may be defined as an individual who, whether alone or in conjunction with other entrepreneurs, plans, initiates, and manages a new business enterprise. He or she may be an innovator such as Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, or simply the entrepreneurial force behind a small, successful bakery. By virtue of being a business owner/founder rather than an employee, entrepreneurship involves great risk but the potential for great (usually personal or financial) reward.

In this Discussion, your task is not to consider entrepreneurship quite this broadly, but rather to consider the related but very different term social entrepreneurship. Behavioral health leaders may not always start their own businesses (although this is possible). More often, these leaders work within an existing organization, program, or cause to which they can apply the principles of social entrepreneurship to become a change agent in the social sector, whether in a for-profit, non-profit, or a hybrid organization. Your textbook provides a series of definitions of social entrepreneurship that you can consider while preparing for your Discussion post.

WEEKLY RESOURCES

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on how social entrepreneurship is defined.
  • Review the “Appalachian by Design” social entrepreneurial case in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Identify an individual you believe to be a successful social entrepreneur. This should be someone other than those individuals presented in the Learning Resources. Assess the personal and leadership characteristics the person possesses.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post a definition of social entrepreneur in your own words, and describe two characteristics of the social entrepreneur you identified that make him or her successful. Briefly give an overview of your selected social entrepreneur’s venture or organization.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

By Day 5

Respond to at least two of your colleagues by sharing insights you gained from having read their posts or by sharing other characteristics not mentioned that make successful social entrepreneurs.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. Use proper APA format and citations.

Week 1: Discussion – TA

Philosophy of Science

How does the lens from which you view the world shape your approach to research inquiry? Why is it important as a scholar-practitioner engaged in research to acknowledge your worldview?

The Learning Resources in this first week will help you answer these questions, and they will provide you with a foundation in the philosophy of science that will help you appreciate various research designs and methods. With this foundation, you will be encouraged to reflect on how your assumptions about the acquisition of truth and the nature of the world influence your approach to the research process.

For this Discussion, you will identify an area of interest for a possible research topic. As you read about the different philosophical orientations in this week’s readings, consider if one of these orientations most closely aligns with your worldview and a particular approach to research.

Then, explain how these assumptions lend themselves to one or more research approaches.

Be sure to support your Main Issue Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

Read a selection of your classmates’ postings.

By Day 6

Respond to a classmate who holds a different philosophical orientation than you and share an insight.

Week 1: Discussion – TA

Degree: Behavioral health

Class: Foundations Grad Study in Psyc

Hopes, Challenges, and Strategies

As you begin your studies at Walden, you have probably thought about what you hope to gain from the program of study you will complete. What are your hopes and aspirations as an emerging professional beginning graduate-level study? Apart from a degree in psychology, also think about what you will gain from engaging with the scholarly community at Walden University. Your Program of Study (POS) document can help you anticipate the topics you will learn about and perhaps the kinds of skills you will master as you complete your graduate degree.

This week, you will discuss potential challenges you and your classmates foresee in the coming weeks. Together, you can share strategies that could help you overcome these challenges, as a group and individually.

This dialogue through the Discussion Board is designed to connect you with your new colleagues so that you can develop community and engage with each other in a supportive manner as you begin the educational journey together.

  • Consider factors that could pose a challenge to the successful completion of your chosen degree.
  • Reflect on your values, ideals, and goals in relation to what you have learned about Walden.
  • Think about how you will incorporate a commitment to social change, particularly as it relates to the area(s) of interest represented by your program/specialization, into your professional, personal, and academic goals.
  • Review the “Meet the Faculty” media programLinks to an external site. found in this week’s Learning Resources and consider the inspiring messages from the faculty.

With these thoughts in mind:

by Day 3

Apply those expectations and hopes to Walden’s mission, vision, and values. Then, describe at least two challenges or barriers you foresee in completing your degree. Share and explain at least one strategy you will use to help you overcome those challenges that might also be useful to your colleagues. Then explain why you chose this particular field of study at Walden and how you intend to use your degree.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings and note the similarities and differences compared to what you shared.
