Evaluating Use of Literature and Problem Statement

Researchers use scholarly literature for various purposes in their work, such as, but not limited to, establishing the need for and importance of their study or describing a theory. The problem statement is typically tied to the literature, and for this reason, these two components of research are presented together this week; this connection among research components will be a recurring theme throughout this course.

For this Discussion, you will evaluate the use of literature and problem statements in assigned journal articles in your discipline to understand what it means for a research study to be justified, grounded, and original. You will use the Use of Literature Checklist, the Problem Statement Checklist, and the Litmus Test as guides for your post.

With these thoughts in mind, refer to the Journal Articles document for your assigned articles for this Discussion. If your last name starts with A through L, use Article A. If your last name starts with M through Z, use Article B. Follow the prompt below for your program.

Week 3: Discussion – TA

Why Is Sustainability Important?

Behavioral health programs seek to solve social problems or issues, but a program can only achieve this goal if it is sustainable. Sustainability is the extent to which an evidence-based intervention program can deliver its intended benefits over an extended period of time after external support from a donor agency is terminated. Historically, money to deliver benefits would come from a variety of sources such as grants, donations, public or philanthropic funds, or private investments. These sources typically have fixed time periods, terms, or other mechanisms that structure the funding. Entrepreneurship skills can help a program escape that structure and become self-sustainable (perhaps without needing other funding sources at all).

In their 2019 report, the Center for Nonprofit Management emphasized the importance of financial sustainability for nonprofit organizations. They highlighted the need for organizations to adopt strategies early on that promote self-sufficiency, ensuring they can continue delivering impactful services in the long term. This includes planning for diverse revenue streams and reducing reliance on traditional funding sources from the outset, despite initial challenges in securing startup support. Thus, it is critical for behavioral health leaders to think about how programs could generate revenue and become self-sustainable very early in the program’s inception. This may be difficult, because early in a program’s life, traditional sources of funding may be needed to get a program started, but ultimately this planning will allow a program to move forward delivering services for years and decades to come.

In this Discussion, you will evaluate the importance of business sustainability for addressing social problems.
