Art Analysis Paper – DUE Monday, April 16

Arts Appreciation

Instructor, Regina Allen: regina.allen@ctcd.edu

As a requirement of this class, you are to write a critical analysis of an original work of art. This could be a painting, sculpture, drawing, print, photograph, or also a public sculpture, mural, or installation work, etc. If you cannot visit one of the listed galleries or museums, then you can locate an art gallery or public art in Killeen. The work can be from any time period, but you must view it in person during the course of this semester (not in the past).

You should include the information listed on the outline, unless it’s not applicable to your work. Use this outline as a framework for your essay, but write it in MLA format. This is not a research paper. Use your critical thinking skills and vocabulary from this class. Plagiarism is cheating and never acceptable!

Please print out, staple, and turn in the paper in the date indicated above. 3-5 pages, MLA

Here’s a very loose framework for your paper. Change it as needed.

I. Chosen Artwork

a. Name and location of the museum, gallery, or public art

b. Name of exhibition, if there is one

c. Name of the artist

d. Title of the work

e. Dimensions of the work, or approximation

f. Media or materials

g. Date, or time period created, or Art Movement (or list as contemporary)

h. Place of origin, if known

i. Manner of display, especially for sculpture, installation, or public art

II. Description of Artwork

a. A thorough description of the formal elements, including media, subject, color, value, line, shape, balance, etc.

b. An analysis of the artwork. What is the subject of the art? And what is the content? What choices has the artist made to support your idea of the content? (Formal elements and subject choices) ***Do not simply repeat what you hear or read. Use your brains and come to your own opinion based on what you observe. This is not a research paper. Back up your opinions with details you observe from the work.

III. Response to the Artwork

a. Your personal response to the work. Why did it draw you in? Be specific- how do the details of the work support your response and interpretation? Do you like the work? Why or why not? Explain your reaction.

b. Additional interesting information about this work, if any.

IV. Photo or image of the Artwork- print out and attach to paper

***Consider this as you would a writing essay. I expect complete sentences and spell check. Please do as fine a job as you can. Use the outline above to organize your essay and write it in MLA format. 3-5 pages. Do not simply list the answers to the outline. Write your info into complete sentences, and organize your paper into paragraphs.

***Any ORIGINAL artwork located anywhere- cafe, your home, shop, civic center, park, etc.. Do not work from a photo or reproduction of a work of art. You must be viewing the original work of art. If the art is a signed print or the art itself is a photograph, then that’s fine. You also may not work from mass-produced posters! You may also not write about art you have created yourself. Choose work that is created by a professional artist.
