However, given that mental health patients and persons with mental health problems present in any and all aspects of health care, mental health awareness and training is required to ensure appropriate care is provided to all persons seeking support.
This assignment aims to focus your attention on both the importance of ensuring that all health professionals are adequately trained in the management of mental illness but also the impact of awareness raising in general.
Critically reflect on and discuss the following statement:
“I am not a trained mental health specialist, so I should not have to deal with people with a mental illness”.
Give working examples where possible and ensure that you include co-morbid presentations in your discussion i.e., mental illness and substance misuse.
To assist you to write this critical reflection we suggest you work through the following:

- Respond to the statement objectively

- What is the nature of the statement?
- What is its purpose?
- What is your position?
- What evidence supports your position?
Step 3 – Begin your essay
- Ensure that you have planned what it is will be the main content, always try to work from a draft plan rather than ‘free’ write your assignment. This will ensure that you are clear about what is required and construct your essay logically.
- Your first paragraph should introduce the statement giving some preliminary information about the subject content. You may want to include the main premise or main point of your essay.
- Next summarise any relevant background facts, issues, key assumptions, etc, that must be understood before the essay’s main point can be appreciated.
- Summarise both sides of the argument or perspective using objective writing style.
- Present your argument or perspective using supporting evidence to back up your ideology.
- Review the impact of your perspective on clinical practice in both general and mental health settings.
