The objective of this journal assignment is to prompt your reflection on various expectations placed on a nurse and to consider how you envision meeting those expectations in your own career. After completing your clinical or simulation day, you’ll need to reflect on your experience and answer one of the following discussion prompts below, your instructor may assign one of the prompts to answer or may let you choose.
Discussion Prompts (choose one to answer)
- Population healthcare and its administration across populations encompass activities from preventing diseases to managing them, addressing various scales from small communities to entire nations, and covering communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as disaster management. Every nurse, irrespective of their position, contributes to population health. Reflecting on your clinical or simulation day, how would a pandemic such as COVID-19 impact your daily responsibilities? What adjustments would be necessary? What patient or client education would be essential, and what educational initiatives would you need to undertake for a specific group or the broader population?
- Population Health must address emergency preparedness and disaster management for the population. Reflecting on your clinical or simulation day, what would need to be done in the facility or scenario to prepare for an emergency situation like a natural disaster or an active shooter? What would be your role as a nurse in situations like these?
- Numerous elements influence the health of a population, including social determinants of health, socioeconomic status, and diversity-equity-inclusion considerations, all of which can exert significant effects. Reflecting on your clinical or simulation day, which of these factors did you observe influencing the health of the individuals or population you interacted with? In what ways were they impacted? As a nurse, what actions can you take to address these factors? How might you advocate for the well-being of your patient, client, or the broader population in this context?
