What is the impact of Telemedicine on the quality of healthcare?

Telemedicine has generally impacted positively in the provision of healthcare. Telemedicine improves efficiency in healthcare provision, inasmuch as it shortens time for service delivery (ATA, 2016). Considering that there are cases where healthcare services can be required for patients in isolated places, telemedicine comes in handy (ATA, 2016). Additionally, through a platform which Telemedicine provides, it is possible for healthcare professionals to exchange notes on crucial matters pertaining health thus improving service delivery. On the other hand, the patients enjoy the benefit saving time that could otherwise be used for frequent visits to the healthcare facility. In regard to this, the healthcare facilities will receive fewer patients hence able to conveniently handle them without further ado. Besides, the healthcare professionals can remotely monitor their patients hence lowering healthcare cost involved in traveling (ATA, 2016). Also, transmission of diseases is significantly reduced because the sick does not have to interact directly with others like fellow patients or even the healthcare providers. Telemedicine holds a special place in the future of healthcare provision. Apart from alleviating infectious parasites and diseases among the patients, telemedicine has a lot of other benefits which significantly improves healthcare. However, telemedicine has its inadequacies which cannot be solved by any other means rather than direct physician-patient contact. There specialized cases which require close supervision of doctors. In such cases, telemedicine is largely ineffective.

In brief, explain how can Telemedicine be part of the six aims for improvement? Quality Chasm report.

According to the quality chasm report, the six aims for improvement are made up of safety (ATA, 2016). Telemedicine has a significant place in this report because of its ability to accomplish all the aims for improvement. As seen before, there are cases where healthcare services can be required for patients in isolated places, telemedicine comes in handy. As a result, telemedicine helps to improve equity in healthcare provision (Tamas, 2015). What is the impact of Telemedicine on the quality of health care?

Telemedicine can be viewed by consumers as “more-convenient, more-timely way to get care. It also happens to be a more cost-effective way to get care” (Bell, 2018). Also, regarding Medicaid it is viewed as both a way to improve upon patient’s health in a real time interactive communication exchange and a cost effective alternative than seeing a provider face-to-face (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, n.d.). Also, if a patient was to enter the Emergency Room during the middle of the night (when most providers must be called in) telemedicine is a great resource. It helps to provide consultations with providers that may be long distances but able to offer medical advice in real time (Brown, 2016). This eliminates patients having to wait until the on-call provider can arrive at the hospital, therefore hopefully making shorter wait times for the consultation. Not only is telemedicine helping with costs, more convenient, and helping with wait times it is also helping rural area healthcare. Through telemedicine larger urban hospitals can link with rural hospitals and help provide telemedicine support through a private Ethernet connection, for example (Brown, 2016). This helps rural hospitals have more access to specialists for their patients, therefore creating a higher quality of care. But is important to note that when utilizing telemedicine that providers ensure that the new technology ensures patient confidentiality, ensure the telehealth vendor is legitimate, and ensuring that old technology will blend well with the new technology (or at least understand what must be done to make the old and new technology compatible) (Hertz, 2013).

In brief explain how can Telemedicine be part of the six aims for improvement? Quality Chasm report.

The six aims include: safe, effective, patient centered, timely, efficient, and equitable (Institute of Medicine, 2001). Telemedicine I think tries to accomplish the six aims for improvement. For example, it gives hospice patients the ability to use Skype to talk with providers therefore allowing them to stay in their homes (Brown, 2016) this is an example of telemedicine being patient centered. When urban hospitals link up with rural healthcare via telemedicine (Brown, 2016), I think that throughout the course of the hospitals being linked all six aims can be accomplished. For example, it can be more effective, efficient, safe, patient centered, and timely for a patient in a rural hospital to see a specialist via telemedicine than to otherwise travel a great distance to receive care.
