Topic

Port-a-Cath System

Problem

Our Outpatient Radiology Department caters patients that needs diagnostic testing for CT Scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, PET CT, Myelograms, plus other diagnostic radiologic testing. These patients have a wide range of age span that our department is catering and majority of their diagnosis is related to cancer mostly with some form of on-going treatment. The risk of infection when accessing this Port-a-Cath system are high due to immuno-compromised. Part of our responsibility is to advocate for patients in keeping them safe and healthy. The proposal of making a policy to reduce Port-a-Cath system access and use will decrease patient exposure to infection. The major complications of implantable venous access ports (IVAPs) placement include infection, thrombosis, catheter obstruction, extravasation, and catheter migration (Radiol, 2014). IVAP-related infection is the most common complication that results in device removal.

Solution

Propose a policy that will state not to access Port-a-Cath system when patient has only one appointment needing IV access. Instead start a peripheral IV. The constant use of Port-a-Cath system exposes patients to high risk of infection. Allow access to Port-a-Cath system only when patient has two or more appointments that involves multiple sticks to the patient. This way it protects the patients from exposure to infection by decreasing the use of Port-a-Cath system. Keeping patient safe and healthy. Better quality care and patient satisfaction.
