One main challenge that the public health fraternity faces is work overload. In my career I have witnessed healthcare professions being overload by work due to the high demand of their services. The professionals have to go an extra mile to carry out additional responsibilities that are not necessarily what they are required to do. The issue of few members of staff has often been raised and is a possible explanation to the workload as well as exhaustion. As a result, there is an increase in the number of people that are dissatisfied with the services they get from health facilities.
In addition, lack of boundaries in the faculty also worsens the workload situation. The boundaries of public health have become blurred, extending into other sectors that influence health opportunities and health outcomes. The public health personnel also have blurred responsibilities, which are not clearly outlined. New diseases are coming up every other day. These emerging diseases prove to be a larger menace for the health professionals as they are characterized mainly by high mobility. The management of chronic diseases especially in developing countries is a challenge and not to mention that there are many cases of high mortality as a consequence of infectious diseases. Even in the developed countries, the management cannot be said to be the best.
Based on the challenges mentioned, as a health professional I will be required to have problem-solving skills to be able to survive in the industry. Numerous problems are experienced ranging from budgeting and operations to customer satisfaction. Having excellent problem-solving skills will enable me to overcome the challenges that I will face in my workplace. In additional, since I will be working with other health professionals and patients strong communications is necessary to help me understand the value of other employees as well as clients. Consequently, I will be able to interact efficiently with everybody else.
Having good work ethics will also be beneficial and will help me deliver the best results in my work. I will be able to make the most of every situation that is presented to me. An additional skill that I will need to develop is interpersonal relationships. Interpersonal skills will be beneficial in ensuring a healthy relationship with management, colleagues and clients to ensure successful service delivery.
One skill that remains fundamental in the public health department is teamwork. It is not possible for the Public health professionals to work in isolation and therefore I will learn how to work with other disciplines for the successful implementation of public health initiatives.
