Q. Since a plant has chloroplasts, why does it still need mitochondria (power-house organelle)?

Chloroplasts and mitochondria are organelles that perform a specific function critical to the cell’s survival. Chloroplasts functions in photosynthesis, which is the use of sunlight to synthesize foods from water and carbon dioxide. The reason why it needs mitochondria is that mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell and it creates ATP (adenosine triphosphate), and without this ATP, the plant will not have a source of energy to operate – chloroplasts to perform their photosynthesis.

Q. -Which plant organelle (chloroplasts vs. mitochondria) helps to reduce the effects of climate change? Explain your answer.

Chloroplasts capture light energy from the sun to produce the free energy stored in ATP and NADPH through a process called photosynthesis.  In photosynthesis plants take carbon dioxide (CO2) out of the atmosphere, and thus help reduce the greenhouse gases warming the planet.
