This week should be a continuation of week 1. Now that you have selected a country and know basic socio-demographic and socio-economic information about it, during week 2, you need to relate it to this week’s material.  In particular, we will use the United States – the world’s largest economy – as the comparative.  You compare your country to the United States on each of the economic variables listed below.

1. GDP and GDP Per Capita:  compare these values for your country with those for the United States, keep the year used as close as possible (the same year is preferred, if available), be specific about the currency in which the numbers are expressed – you should be able to obtain all values in US Dollars.  If the values are in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), do note that – most likely they will be in PPP.
2. Using the data you collected for question 1, compare the standard of living of your country to that of the United States (remember that by definition, GDP Per Capita is the universal measure of standard of living, but you may also include other variables if you wish).
3. What is the most recent inflation rate and does it compare to the inflation rate for the same year in the United States?
4. What is the most recent rate of growth of the country and how does it compare to the economic growth rate for the same year in the United States?
5. What explains the recent economic growth, or lack of growth in your country?

Week 1 submission:

Uruguay

The country I have chosen to research is the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, or simply Uruguay. Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America, bordered by Brazil, Argentina, and the Atlantic Ocean. Uruguay is about 68,000 square miles with a population of approximately 3.4 million, and the official language is Spanish. The people of Uruguay have primarily Spanish and Italian ancestry; almost 88% of the population’s ethnicity is white. The most popular religion is Catholicism, with a relatively small, although the largest in South America, Jewish community living in the capital of Montevideo (Uruguay, 2022).

The national currency in Uruguay is the Uruguayan Peso. In the year 2020, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stood at $75.06 billion, while the GDP per capita was $21,600 (Uruguay – The World Factbook, 2022). Agriculture is Uruguay’s most prominent industry, with beef being its main export. Uruguay’s top five export categories are meat, wood, grain, dairy, and cereal, while Uruguay’s top five imports: are fuel, machinery, vehicles, electronics, and plastics (TRADING ECONOMICS, n.d.).

Uruguay has a Constitutional Republic type of government with an elected president who serves for a term of five years (globalEDGE, n.d.). Uruguay is a member country of most of the same major international organizations as the United States, including the United Nations (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Uruguay also has a strong presence in major regional organizations such as the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), the Community of Latin America and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI) (Pike, n.d.).
