CATHERINE,

Health research projects are complex and have grown to involve patients and other stakeholders in the research process. Stakeholder involvement and feedback is essential for management effectiveness in clinical research (Pandi-Perumal et. al, 2015). Patients and their family are affected directly by program development and clinical research have a strong motivation to be involved in the planning and implementation of new program changes.

Prior to engaging stakeholders, it’s important to know who they are. After the identification of stakeholders, insight to what they are thinking, saying, feeling and doing is important to gage their level of interest and support (Pandi-Perumal et. al, 2015). Engaging stakeholders must begin well in advance with open dialogue as part of project implementation. No decisions should be already made before commencing stakeholder engagement on project-related issues (Pandi-Perumal et. al, 2015). Develop visual tools and stories to capture the interest and inspire stakeholders to participate in the project development.

SHANI,

We call people who are impacted by our projects and business activities, as stakeholders. A key skill in project management is learning to win support from interested parties or stakeholders. Mastering this skill ensures that your projects are more likely to succeed. All the projects that we manage have stakeholders and for the successful implementation of a change proposal project, we need to take into consideration the support of all stakeholders. Both internal, (the facility, unit or health care setting where the change process is situated), and the external stakeholders, (any individual or group outside the health care setting) should be considered if you want to be successful in the implementation of the project. To ensure project success, it helps that we must know all the key stakeholders on our project, and how they prefer to communicate, what their needs are, and what the acceptable results are. One of the main reasons why projects fail is because the deliverables were not what the customer wanted, or they did not meet the customer’s needs. Engaging stakeholders at the beginning and during the implementation of the project will help reduce and uncover risks and increase their faith in the project. When stakeholders are adequately engaged, their influence spreads everywhere. If we make sure and consider that all stakeholders are part of our team, they all will work in tandem and will bring value and expertise to help ensure the project is a success (Schoenhard, L.,2019).

Stakeholders are important to a project because they can provide expertise in the area of their subject as they are well versed in the current process and have adequate knowledge about them. Project managers, or others who oversee deliverables, may not be experts on every project. It is important to involve all key stakeholders when gathering and documenting requirements to avoid missing major deliverables of the project. The we engage stakeholders in the project the more we can reduce and uncover risks on the project. When discussing initial requirements, project needs, and constraints, stakeholders may bring up issues or concerns about meeting those things and the knowledgeable stakeholders can help in this process. The success rates are much high when more stakeholders are involved in the project when stakeholders are aware of the project scope, key milestones, and when they will be expected to review any deliverables prior to final acceptance. The main idea of getting the stakeholders support is the projection and stress on the common goal and achievement.

BELINDA,

Quality improvement includes shared efforts among health care staff and stakeholders to diagnose and treat problems in the health care system (Silver et al., 2016). The first step in forming an improvement project is choosing the correct stakeholders. “Stakeholder mailing and analysis are useful tools at this stage, and these are reviewed to help identify individuals who might have a vested interest in the project” (Silver et al., 2016, p. 1.).Awareness of groups that will be supportive and those that will resist can prevent conflict and administrative delays. My project is to improve patient experience scores by implementing the use of Surgical Nurse Liaison (SNL) in the preoperative setting to improve communication. Surgeons along with their team of ARNPs, PAs, and surgical fellows will be my primary stakeholders. Physicians have the most influence on variation in health care outcomes and without their engagement it would be difficult to improve health care delivery (Silver et al., 2016). Patients, patient’s loved ones, and nurses are other stakeholders I would need to support my improvement project. A perioperative nurse liaison can offer support, review pre-operative education, review post-operative education, answer questions, provide information to the family during surgery, and mediates communication between the surgeon and family members (Stefan, 2010). Without proper communication, patient experience will deteriorate resulting in dissatisfaction of quality care. Quality patient care, process efficiency, and staff satisfaction are all motivating factors for my stakeholders (Silver et al., 2016). I believe physicians will welcome the SNL providing frequent updates and answering questions to family members as well as the other nurse staff members who are busy either preparing other patients, in OR, and are recovering other patients. The SNL provides personal and individualize services to physicians, patients, and family members.
