Week 7: Discussion – Communications and Marketing – TA
Communications and Marketing
Note to Students: There are unique post and response dates for this week.
As a behavioral health professional transitioning from a clinical or client-facing role to a leadership position, you may be more familiar with scientific or clinical communication styles. However, when advocating for your programs, especially in leadership and stakeholder engagement, you’ll need to adopt a different approach: advocacy communication. This style is geared towards engaging a diverse audience—ranging from clients and community members to board members and funders—and requires clear, persuasive, and strategically crafted messaging.
For this Discussion, you will develop a communications plan for your chosen initiative at Harbor City Behavioral Health Center (HCBHC), whether it’s the opioid abuse/recovery program or the elder care program. Your communication plan should strategically outline how to effectively convey your message to garner support and engagement from stakeholders.

To prepare for this Discussion:
Create a comprehensive communications plan for the new HCBHC initiative. Use the guidelines provided in this week’s Learning Resources to structure your plan. Consider the following key questions as you develop your communication strategy:
- Purpose: Why are you communicating with the community? What are your goals for this communication?
- Audience: Who are the key stakeholders or audience segments you need to reach? Consider the different needs and perspectives of each group.
- Message: What is the core message you want to convey? How can you tailor your message to resonate with different audiences?
- Channels: Which communication channels will be most effective for delivering your message? Think about the platforms that your audience uses and trusts.
- Distribution: How will you implement your communication strategy? Who do you need to contact, and what steps are required to use the chosen channels?
- Timing and Frequency: When is the best time to communicate your message, and how often should you engage your audience?
By Day 5
Post your communications plan detailing your strategies and considerations for each of these aspects. Your plan should reflect a thoughtful approach to advocacy communication that effectively supports your program’s goals and engages your community and stakeholders. Also, be sure to have uploaded your marketing brochure to the Doc Sharing area for review.
Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings and review their brochures.
By Day 7
Respond to at least two colleagues by offering constructive feedback on their brochures or communications plans. Provide additional (new) information for consideration, and provide an explanation for your comments.
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. Use proper APA format and citations.
