Your topic is much too broad. You want to focus on educating patients about weight loss strategies and best practices in a high-risk patient population. Look at Healthy People 2030 for the goals for obesity in the adult population. Here are the Healthy People 2030 goals pertaining to obesity:

Here is a clear, graduate-level summary of Healthy People 2030 goals and objectives related to obesity in the adult population, with emphasis on what is most relevant for Family Nurse Practitioners in primary care.

🩺 Healthy People 2030: Adult Obesity Goals

🎯 Overarching Goal

The national goal for obesity in Healthy People 2030 is:

➡️ “Reduce overweight and obesity by helping people eat healthy and get enough physical activity.”

This reflects a population health and prevention-focused approach, emphasizing:

  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Behavioral change
  • Health equity

📊 Core Adult Obesity Objective

🔑 Primary Objective (NWS–03)

➡️ Reduce the proportion of adults with obesity

  • Baseline: 38.6%
  • Most recent data: 41.8%
  • Target: 36.0%
  • Desired direction: Decrease

🧠 Clinical Significance

  • Obesity is strongly linked to:
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • Cardiovascular disease
    • Stroke
    • Certain cancers

👉 This makes obesity a priority condition for FNP-led primary care interventions

🏥 Health Care–Focused Objective

🔑 Objective (NWS–05)

➡️ Increase the proportion of health care visits for adults with obesity that include counseling

  • Focus areas:
    • Weight management
    • Nutrition
    • Physical activity
  • Target: Increase counseling rates during visits

🧠 Clinical Relevance for FNPs

This objective directly supports:

  • Preventive counseling
  • Lifestyle modification
  • Use of strategies like Teach-Back, motivational interviewing, and shared decision-making

🥗 Related Supporting Objectives (Indirect but Critical)

Healthy People 2030 intentionally links obesity to broader behavioral and lifestyle goals:

🍎 Nutrition

  • Reduce added sugar intake (NWS–10)

🏃 Physical Activity

  • Increase adults meeting aerobic activity guidelines (PA–02, PA–03)
  • Reduce sedentary behavior (PA–01)

🧠 Diabetes Prevention

  • Increase participation in diabetes prevention programs

🌍 Population Health Perspective

Healthy People 2030 emphasizes:

  • Health equity and social determinants of health (SDOH)
  • Culturally appropriate interventions
  • Access to:
    • Healthy foods
    • Safe environments for physical activity

👉 This is critical for FNP practice in underserved populations.

🧠 Implications for Family Nurse Practitioners

For FNPs, these goals translate into clinical practice expectations:

✔ Screening & Risk Identification

  • BMI, waist circumference
  • Prediabetes and metabolic syndrome screening

✔ Counseling & Education (Key!)

  • Nutrition counseling
  • Physical activity guidance
  • Weight loss strategies (5–10% reduction)

✔ Evidence-Based Interventions

  • Intensive behavioral counseling
  • Referral to:
    • Diabetes Prevention Programs (DPP)
    • Nutrition services

✔ Communication Strategies

  • Teach-Back
  • Motivational interviewing

👉 These align directly with NWS–05 (counseling objective)

✨ Key Takeaways

  • Healthy People 2030 identifies obesity as a major national health priority
  • The primary measurable goal:✔ Reduce adult obesity prevalence (NWS–03)
  • A critical clinical strategy:✔ Increase provider counseling (NWS–05)
  • Strong emphasis on:✔ Lifestyle change✔ Prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease✔ Health equity

💡 Teaching Tip (for your FNP students)

You can frame this succinctly:

“Healthy People 2030 moves obesity care from treatment alone to prevention through lifestyle counseling and patient engagement, making primary care providers—especially FNPs—central to achieving national health goals.”

I encourage you to focus on using Teach-Back to educate at-risk patient populations over a three-month period. Teach Back will increase patient adherence to their treatment plan, and results can be measured using the Hemoglobin A1C which has a strong, positive correlation with obesity and the development of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2.

There is a Teach Back web page with a Tool Kit.This would be an excellent project! You could also use Teach Back to educate adolescents on the hazards of vaping over a three-month period using Teach Back.Either one of these foci would make an excellent project for this course assignment.
