Preparation

Conflict is inevitable among members of any team, but especially during high stress situations, such as sometimes occur in health care. As a health care leader, you will be called upon to resolve conflict on your team and within your organization. Not only will you have to manage conflict that occurs with you directly, but you will also have to handle conflict situations where you were not involved and not present.

Before beginning this assignment, complete the Vila Health: Conflict Resolution media simulation.

Instructions

Create a PowerPoint deck with speaking notes for a presentation you would give to hospital leadership to prepare them to handle situations such as the one in the Vila Health: Conflict Resolution simulation. When you have created your PowerPoint deck, create an audio recording in which you present the information in your PowerPoint deck.

You are free to organize your presentation in whatever way you like. The following outline describes one way to structure your PowerPoint presentation:

  1. Cover slide: One slide that includes the name and number of the course, the name of the assignment, submission date, and your name and contact information.
  2. Introduction slide: One slide that provides a brief overview of conflict resolution as it relates to the incident described in the Vila Health simulation. This is the elevator speech of the simulation and captures an overview in a list format. Provide two short paragraphs in the speaking notes to support the points made in the list.
  3. Background slide: One slide that explains the background of the incident described in the Vila Health simulation.
  4. Analysis of the situation: A section of two slides that explains how a lack of cultural competence can compound already stressful situations and impede collaboration.
    • Describe the communication techniques that were used in this simulation that should be avoided in situations that involve diverse cultures.
  5. Communication slide 1: One slide that lists at least two communication strategies that leadership can use to help the organization resolve conflicts like the one in the simulation. These should be communication strategies that hospital leadership should promote within the organization going forward to resolve conflict like this in the future.
  6. Communication slide 2: One slide that explains the role of relationships in communication.
    • You may wish to discuss relationships between leaders and followers and leaders overseeing teams.
  7. Communication slide 3: One slide that explains the role of communication in teamwork and collaboration.
  8. Application of literature to the case study: One slide that recommends strategies that could be implemented to improve the relationships between nursing and housekeeping in the Vila Health simulation.
  9. Summary: One slide that sums up the situation in the Vila Health simulation.
  10. References: This section should list, in APA format, the scholarly references used to support the communication strategies for conflict resolution and the role of relationships in communication.

For the recorded presentation:

  • Use Kaltura or another software application to create an audio recording that accompanies the PowerPoint presentation. See Audio and Video in this Course in Tools and Resources for audio and video options.
  • Do not read directly from the slides; instead, contribute additional information or elaboration on the content provided. You may find it useful to write a detailed outline, a script, or speaker notes on the slides as a reference for creating your audio recording.

Additional Requirements

  • Length: The recorded presentation should be between 5–10 minutes in length.
  • References: Cite at least three references from peer-reviewed journals, in addition to your textbook. Refer to the Health Care Administration Undergraduate Program Library Guide for more information.
  • Format: Use current APA style and formatting for references and citations. Refer to Evidence and APA on Campus for more information.

Submission Requirements

Submit your PowerPoint presentation and a link or file for the audio recording to the assignment area. If you use Kaltura, refer to Using Kaltura for directions for recording and uploading your presentation in the courseroom.

(This information will also be used for u10d1.) The purpose of this Adobe Connect project is to apply what you have learned to a conflict that you identify in a domain specific found in the Coleman chapters 46–56.

  • Identify, describe, and analyze the conflict in detail. Here are some of the questions to consider.
    • Why did you select this chapter? What is it important to you?
    • Who are the parties involved?
    • What are the relationships between the parties?
    • What are the issues?
    • Is culture a factor in this conflict?
    • Is gender a factor in this conflict?
    • What emotions are involved in the conflict?
  • Identify variables within the institutional structure that may have contributed to this conflict. In other words, how have factors within this structure—especially in relation to the hierarchy of the structure and how the structure itself is structured—contributed to the conflict?
  • Discuss how this conflict was resolved (if it was resolved). Describe the strategies that were used to resolve the conflict.
  • Evaluate the strategies that were used to resolve this conflict, if any. What worked, and what did not work? Explain why. Discuss any problems that resulted from the fact that the resolution to this conflict was less than ideal.
  • Propose a new, detailed strategy for resolving this conflict that you believe would be more effective than the resolution that was reached. Determine what you believe to be the most appropriate way to resolve this conflict. Questions to consider as you develop your new strategy include:
    • Did you consider all parties involved?
    • Did you anticipate obstacles to your plan?
    • Will the parties involved buy into the plan?
    • Will the parties involved be satisfied with the outcome?
    • What are the alternatives?

Important: Your project must incorporate material from at least three of the five sources you used for your The Significance of Institutional Conflict assignment from Unit 8. In addition, your project should draw upon at least one theory (and preferably more) that was discussed in your textbooks. Demonstrate that you understand what you have read by applying it effectively to discussing your conflict and resolutions to this conflict.

In addition:

  • Post to u10d1.
  • Reflecting upon your own course experience, select one strategy you could immediately apply to a situation in your life.
  • Include one slide that lists your sources in APA format. Anything you have consulted online or in print such as a graphic, photo, quotation, et cetera, must be properly cited!
