On Being a Social Entrepreneur

You have explored the concepts of social entrepreneurship and the social entrepreneur role throughout this course. Your ideas about what makes a social entrepreneur and how this role may fit into behavioral health leadership may have evolved. Perhaps you started with a simple definition of social entrepreneur, considering the term to apply to someone who makes money but also does something socially positive. Now, your definition may have evolved to include the social entrepreneur as an agent of change, a pioneer of innovations that benefit humanity, and/or as a solution creator who works with various stakeholders to create programs that show measurable impact.

For this Discussion, you will consider your own definition of social entrepreneurship, how it has evolved, and what it means in practice. You will also explore how you personally might create and implement a plan for innovation and change.

By Day 3

Post a response to the following prompt:

If someone asked you what would you do as a social entrepreneur, what would you tell him or her? Be specific and provide examples. Then, based on this week’s Learning Resources, briefly explain how you would create and implement a plan for innovation and change in behavioral health. Finally, explain whether you see yourself as a disruptor or opportunist.

In the context of research, alignment and social change will be important topics to return to as you prepare for the next courses in the research sequence and continue your development as a scholar-practitioner.

Consider, for example, what criteria are used in your discipline to evaluate alignment of research components. And in what way will your future research contribute to your identity as scholar-practitioner who is dedicated to positive social change?

For this Discussion, you will consider criteria for evaluating alignment among the various components of a research study. You will also reflect on your role as a positive social change agent through research.

Behavioral Health leadership and Management in Varied Settings

As we wrap up this course, it would be helpful for you to engage in some reflection and discussion about how you can apply the skills and information learned in this course to different types of behavioral health settings. The unique challenges and rewards of being a manager or leader in behavioral health care might vary depending on whether you work in for-profit, nonprofit, or governmental settings. To get a better understanding for where you might fit best, it is a good idea to learn from people working in different behavioral health settings.

For this week’s Discussion, you will interview a leader in a behavioral health care setting of your choosing, and share what you have learned in the Discussion forum.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources on the varied behavioral health care settings.
  • Select a behavioral health care setting and arrange an interview with a leader in that organization.
  • Conduct an informational interview with at least one leader of a behavioral health care setting. Think about whether this person is in a for-profit, nonprofit, or governmental setting.
  • Reflect on the setting and the interview.

Important note: Be sure that in your post, you do not identify the individual or organization by name in order to protect their privacy. You can use a pseudonym.

By Day 3

Post a response to the following:

Briefly describe the organization and the leader’s role. Post an analysis of the different challenges involved in leading and managing in such an organization. Describe at least two components studied in this course and what you learned from your interviewee about those facets of her or his work. What is your preferred setting? Critically evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses and how they compare to the type of setting you might work in.
