Behavioral Health leadership and Management in Varied Settings
As we wrap up this course, it would be helpful for you to engage in some reflection and discussion about how you can apply the skills and information learned in this course to different types of behavioral health settings. The unique challenges and rewards of being a manager or leader in behavioral health care might vary depending on whether you work in for-profit, nonprofit, or governmental settings. To get a better understanding for where you might fit best, it is a good idea to learn from people working in different behavioral health settings.
For this week’s Discussion, you will interview a leader in a behavioral health care setting of your choosing, and share what you have learned in the Discussion forum.

To prepare for this Discussion:
- Review this week’s Learning Resources on the varied behavioral health care settings.
- Select a behavioral health care setting and arrange an interview with a leader in that organization.
- Conduct an informational interview with at least one leader of a behavioral health care setting. Think about whether this person is in a for-profit, nonprofit, or governmental setting.
- Reflect on the setting and the interview.
Important note: Be sure that in your post, you do not identify the individual or organization by name in order to protect their privacy. You can use a pseudonym.
By Day 3
Post a response to the following:
Briefly describe the organization and the leader’s role. Post an analysis of the different challenges involved in leading and managing in such an organization. Describe at least two components studied in this course and what you learned from your interviewee about those facets of her or his work. What is your preferred setting? Critically evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses and how they compare to the type of setting you might work in.
Read a selection of your colleagues’ posts.
By Day 7
Respond to at least one colleague’s original post in one or more of the following ways:
- Ask a probing question and provide insight into how one would answer your question and why.
- Ask a probing question and provide the foundation, or rationale, for the question.
- Expand on your colleague’s posting by offering a new perspective or insight.
- Agree with a colleague and offer additional (new) supporting information for consideration.
- Disagree with a colleague by respectfully discussing and supporting a different perspective.
