Week 1 Discussion – TA

What Is Social Entrepreneurship and Who Are Social Entrepreneurs?

When exploring a new concept, sometimes the clearest way to define it is to see it in contrast with other, more well-known concepts, thereby seeing its parameters in relief. To that end, it may be helpful to first consider what traditional, or commercial, entrepreneurship is before you consider social entrepreneurship. An entrepreneur may be defined as an individual who, whether alone or in conjunction with other entrepreneurs, plans, initiates, and manages a new business enterprise. He or she may be an innovator such as Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, or simply the entrepreneurial force behind a small, successful bakery. By virtue of being a business owner/founder rather than an employee, entrepreneurship involves great risk but the potential for great (usually personal or financial) reward.

In this Discussion, your task is not to consider entrepreneurship quite this broadly, but rather to consider the related but very different term social entrepreneurship. Behavioral health leaders may not always start their own businesses (although this is possible). More often, these leaders work within an existing organization, program, or cause to which they can apply the principles of social entrepreneurship to become a change agent in the social sector, whether in a for-profit, non-profit, or a hybrid organization. Your textbook provides a series of definitions of social entrepreneurship that you can consider while preparing for your Discussion post.

WEEKLY RESOURCES

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on how social entrepreneurship is defined.
  • Review the “Appalachian by Design” social entrepreneurial case in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Identify an individual you believe to be a successful social entrepreneur. This should be someone other than those individuals presented in the Learning Resources. Assess the personal and leadership characteristics the person possesses.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post a definition of social entrepreneur in your own words, and describe two characteristics of the social entrepreneur you identified that make him or her successful. Briefly give an overview of your selected social entrepreneur’s venture or organization.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

By Day 5

Respond to at least two of your colleagues by sharing insights you gained from having read their posts or by sharing other characteristics not mentioned that make successful social entrepreneurs.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources. Use proper APA format and citations.
